About the service
Auslan / English is maintained by Preet Prasad as part of a University of Western Australia Honours research project. It explains research into translating Auslan video into English text and optional speech. It is a research prototype, not an accredited interpreting service or an official University service.
The public release provides recorded examples, research results and an experimental live translator that runs in your browser after a one-time model download that you choose to start (see the Privacy Policy). The translator checks, and shows, whether your browser and device can run it. Features may change or be unavailable.
Understanding the output
Translations may be incomplete, incorrect or unrelated to the signing. Model confidence is not a probability that an answer is correct, and a high score does not establish that a person is signing. Recorded benchmark results do not establish accuracy for new webcam users.
Use the system for exploration and research. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, emergency or other consequential communication, or as a replacement for a qualified Auslan interpreter. Review English output before choosing to copy or speak it. See the research limitations for the evidence behind these boundaries.
Using the site responsibly
Only submit a recording when you have permission from the people shown and the right to use it. Keep sensitive or confidential information out of experimental recordings. Do not use the service to impersonate someone, harass people, identify signers or misrepresent a machine-generated sentence as their verified words.
Do not bypass access restrictions, disrupt the service or use it to gain unauthorised access to data or systems. Responsible research and good-faith issue reports are welcome; send reports privately to 23857493@student.uwa.edu.au without including another person’s private data.
Code, recordings and other materials
Rights in dataset recordings and third-party materials remain with their respective owners. Their licences and attribution requirements are separate from these terms. See Credits & Licensing before reusing material.
These terms do not transfer ownership of anything you submit. On this site, recordings are processed in your browser and are not uploaded; in a separate server-backed research deployment, they are processed on that server to provide the requested translation. In neither case does the application save them for model training. See the Privacy Policy for data handling.
The model files the translator downloads carry their own licences, listed with the files on Hugging Face; the translation models are released for non-commercial research use.
Do not imply endorsement by the University, dataset creators or people shown in examples. Cite reported results with their evaluation conditions and distinguish saved demonstrations from live model output.
Availability and your rights
The project does not promise uninterrupted availability, suitability for a particular task or accurate translation. It is provided for research exploration with the limitations described on this site.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, including any applicable rights under Australian Consumer Law.
External services and linked resources are subject to their own terms. Changes to this page will carry an updated date. For questions about these terms, contact 23857493@student.uwa.edu.au.
